We don’t always get what we want…

Deep Wilderness

Many people seek a spiritual experience in Nature (myself included). They climb mountains, expecting or hoping for such an experience. They sit on top of high peaks, gazing at the sunset and inwardly shout “Come on, then! Enlighten me!” as if they have earned the right to it.

Nature is indifferent. It doesn’t owe us a religious experience after we have sweated and stumbled for 6 hours up a slope, but we sometimes act as if it does. Our little egos demand a reward for such hardship, and we feel cheated when that reward is not forthcoming, when we are ignored. Nature couldn’t care less. That rock you sit on at the summit was there millennia before you and it will continue to be there long, long after you are gone. Don’t expect it to deliver on demand. It owes you nothing.

But it is that very act of desiring…
